The largest global slaughter of dolphins and whales currently takes place in the country of Japan. Methods of hunting these “small cetaceans” include hand harpoon, small type coastal whaling and drive hunts. The drive hunt is perhaps the most well known of these methods. It is currently permitted in a single Prefecture – Wakayama – in the town of Taiji. The drive season takes place annually from September to March, however, in recent years the drive has closed early (the past three season’s have wrapped up in late February).
Between 2000-2013 a total of 17,686 small cetaceans were killed via the drive hunt method in Taiji, Japan while another 1,406 animals were live-captured for sale the aquarium industry.
