Guide to Abbreviations
Confused about the abbreviations you see on the Ceta-Base website? Here are some tips to reading the inventories and data found on the site.

How to Read the Inventory Table
Category | Description |
---|---|
Image | Thumbnail that links to larger image, if no image is available it will display "No Image Yet" |
Species (1) | Species of the individual, the common name, example: bottlenose, beluga, etc. |
Species (2) | Species of the individual, scientific name, example Tursiops truncatus |
Name | Current name as assigned by the holding facility. If an animal has been re-named all previous names will be indicated either by parentheses or in the “Notes” section. example: Gibbs (Stormy), or Gibbs and in the Notes section “Gibbs was previously named Stormy while living at…” |
- IMAGE: A thumbnail linking to a larger picture of the animal. If no picture of the animal is available a “No Image Yet” placeholder will appear.
- SPECIES (1): Species of the individual, the common name, example: bottlenose, beluga, etc.
- SPECIES (2): Species of the individual, scientific name, example Tursiops truncatus
- NAME: Current name as assigned by the holding facility. If an animal has been re-named all previous names will be indicated either by parentheses or in the “Notes” section. example: Gibbs (Stormy), or Gibbs and in the Notes section “Gibbs was previously named Stormy while living at…”
- AGE: Individuals year of birth with estimated years noted as e.YYYY and known years noted as a.YYYY. For example, a dolphin with an estimated year of birth as 1966 would be e.1966. A captive born dolphin, born in 1992 would be listed as a.1992.
- SEX: Individuals sex will be listed male (M), female (F) or unknown (U)
- ACQUIRED: Date the individual entered into captivity, estimated dates will be indicated by italics
- BY: Method by which the individual entered captivity, methods will be listed as:
- WC: Wild Caught, animals that were captured for the purpose of public display
- CB: Captive Born, animals that were born in human care
- RR: Rescue/Rehab, animals that were rescued or who stranded
- SB: Stillbirth, calves that were delivered as stillbirth
- MC: Miscarriage, pregnancies that ended in miscarriage
- CAPTURE/BORN AT: Location the animal first entered captivity
- TRANSFER HISTORY: Animal’s history in captivity with the name of the facility and arrival date in parentheses, for example, an animal transferred to Marineland on June 1, 1988 would be written as Marineland (June 1, 1988).
- MOTHER: Animal’s mother, if captured, this will be listed as “Wild”
- FATHER: Animal’s father, if captured, this will be listed as “Wild”. Unknown sires will be listed as “-“
